Lessons of 2023 – Finish STRONG!

2023 started very differently than I anticipated. Wrapping up 2022 things were going well. Shortly after the New Year I was suddenly looking for my next role; corporate acquisitions have a way of shaking things up. Change can be uncomfortable. While not ideal, getting out of one’s comfort zone opens new possibilities. Overall, I would say I learned more this year than in the past few. Here’s just a few of the lessons from 2023.
The Job Search / Market
If there’s one segment that needs an overhaul, this is it. My heart goes out to those still “stuck” in their searches. There must be a better way. Endless submissions, snubs, and opportunistic “services” (let’s leave it at that) are all part of this dystopian nightmare. My only advice is to seek outside help for your resume; pay what you feel is reasonable to go after the role you desire.
My Support System
I’ve heard it said, “sometimes you have to lose everything to see who still stands with you.” This was the biggest surprise of 2023. My sincere thanks to those who reached out with a text, meeting invite, lunch or just took the time to see how I was doing. It was those moments that helped me get through the rough times. Special thanks to my wonderful wife, Tara, and my kids who kept me going each day.
Learn Something New
While going through my search, I decided to add to my skillset. I completed a Digital Transformation Certification online. This was a great way to stay sharp, understand some concepts I’ve heard while learning new ones that will add to my skillset. I will say that the concept of Digital Transformation is one everyone should become more familiar.
My Faith
There were tough times this year, but in my worst hours my faith comforted me. These lessons were not always easy but helped me understand what it means to give it to God; “Do not fear for I am with you” – Isaiah 41:10. I can literally point to the moment I hit rock bottom and see where God’s hand guided me to where I needed to go. We are never alone and just need to open our hearts and minds for guidance.
The Payoff
This isn’t just about a job. This is about landing exactly where I needed to be in my career journey. I have the wonderful honor of leading an amazing team of professionals at WorkForce Software. As Vice President of Learning & Development I am drawing from every lesson learned in my previous roles and I couldn’t be happier! I have the privilege of building a learning department the way I know works best for the business and the people within it. There are certainly challenges every day to learn a new industry and organization, but that’s where the growth occurs.
2023 certainly had its ups and downs, more so than other years. I hope 2024 provides a little more comfort and consistency, but plenty of opportunities to learn. My thanks to all who supported me in 2023, you truly made a difference helping me through the first half of the year. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
